How to Disable the Windows XP Splash Screen

Ever wonder what's going on behind that splash screen? Well, now you can find out!

Right click My Computer, Properties, Advanced, Startup and Recovery, Edit. Edit BOOT.INI. Add "/SOS" right after "/fastdetect" with a space between. The line will look something like this:

multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Professional" /fastdetect /SOS. When you're finished. The first part, multi(0)..... may not be the same on your machine. Upon restarting, the splash screen will be gone. It can be re-enabled by removing the new switch.

How to Have a Better Disk Cleanup Windows XP

This tip will show you how to create an unattended disk cleanup which will also empty your prefetch folder.

This tip assumes you have Windows XP installed in c:\windows.

Step 1.

Create a new text file and place the following contents inside:
c:\windows\system32\cleanmgr.exe /dc /sageset: 1
c:
cd \
cd c:\windows\prefetch
del *.* /q

Step 2.
Save the file, changing the extension from .txt to .bat
For this tip's purpose, we will call it clean.bat

Step 3.
Execute the file. This will run the Disk Cleanup program in a special mode which asks what items you will want cleaned when Disk Cleanup performs an unattended cleanup. Check the items you wish to have cleaned up, then click OK.

Step 4.
Right-click on the clean.bat file and click edit. Change the first line to read:
c:\windows\system32\cleanmgr.exe /dc /sagerun: 1

Step 5.
Save the file. You can execute this file in place of running Disk Cleanup, or, to have this program run unattended, run the Add Scheduled Task Wizard in the Control Panel and create a scheduled task using the clean.bat file you just created.

Note: This cleanup script will also clear windows prefetch directory. Often this directory can become cluttered with old appication and a cleaning would free up disk space but it will result in a one time performance decrease and windows has to rebuild the cache with active software afterwards.

a. The type of Hard Disk in CMOS may not be set properly.

a. May some Directories or Files crash with other files.
b. Use CHKDSK/F or SCANDISK Command to correct it.

21. HARD DISK MAKING NOISE WHILE PROCESSING
a. Unstabilized power supply.
b. Check for Loose Contact.
c. Do not use Y Connectors for Hard Disk.
d. It may create Bad Sector OR Weak Hard Disk.

22. HARD DISK HANGS WHILE PROCESSING

Check for Bad Sector by using CHKDSK or SCANDISK Command. If found format the Hard Disk and set Partition before that area. (This is the only procedure to use Hard Disk with Bad Sector) OR (To avoid Bad Sectors use Standard Power Supply)

23. HARD DISK NOT DETECTED

a. Check Power Connector

b. Check Data Cables

c. Check Jumpers

24. PARTITION NOT SHOWN

Operating System where the Hard Disk formatted is not supported with present Mother Board. For Eg: Hard Disk formatted with Pentium System will hide their partitions for 486 System.

25. MMX/DLL FILE MISSING

May the above files may be corrupted due to power failure or Virus. Make available above files from other Computer. OR Reinstall Windows 98 Operating System. (This procedure will not make any effect on existing Data).

26. WINDOWS REGISTRY ERROR

This will happen due to sudden ON/OFF of the system. Final solution is to Reinstall Operating System.

27. DISPLAY COLOUR DOES NOT MATCH

a. Configure Display Card properly with their CD.

b. The Standard setting for Windows is set it to 800x600 for better performance.

Steps to Delete an Undeletable file

Have you ever experience the situation of deleting the files is unallowed. This is because the files that are in use might be locked by the explorer.exe process. Sometimes you could have no other option other than the deletion of the locked process. In most cases it could be possible only after restarting the computer. There is also an option to delete the file without restarting the computer (not recommended).

Follow the steps to delete such undeletable files.

• Open the Command Prompt and navigate to the folder where undeletable file is available
  
• Press CTRL+ALT+DEL key. Select ‘Process’ tab in the ‘Task Manager’ window
  
• Kill the process ‘explorer.exe’ by selecting the ‘End Process’ from the right-click menu
  
• From the command prompt, now delete the undeletable files
  
• Bring up the Task Manager window and create a new task(by selecting file->new task) and type as ‘explorer.exe’ in the ‘create new task’ field.
  
• Click the ‘OK’ button now to revert the changes.

Hope you all got the steps to delete an undeletable file.

Shutting down Windows XP Faster

Sometimes the users could be irritated while system takes plenty of time to shut down the computer. At the backend the processor needs to kill down the active processors. We can manually change the set time factor for processor kill time and so the shut down time can be minimised. Let me give out the steps to handle the process. It could be possible by making changes in the registry settings. Do follows the steps to do shut down quicker.

• Go to the Registry Editor(by ‘regedit’ from the run command)
  
• Select the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE=> SYSTEM=> CurrentControl Set=> Control from the left pane
  
• Select the ‘WaitToKillServiceTimeout’ from the right pane.
  
• Change the value field from ‘2000′ to ‘200′

And you could feel now the Windows XP shutting down quicker.

Captain Marvel 101

Captain Marvel is a fictional comic book superhero, originally published by Fawcett Comics and later by DC Comics. Created in 1939 by artist C. C. Microsoft Windows 3.1

Windows 3.1 (originally codenamed Janus, of which two betas were published), released on 18th March 1992, includes a TrueType font system (and a set of highly legible fonts already installed), which effectively made Windows a serious desktop publishing platform for the first time.

Windows 3.1 was designed to have a large degree of backward compatibility with older Windows platforms. As with Windows 3.0, version 3.1 had File Manager and Program Manager, but unlike all previous versions, Windows 3.1 and later supported 32-bit disk access, couldn't run in real mode, and included Minesweeper instead of Reversi.

House of M was an eight-part comic book crossover storyline published by Marvel Comics in 2005. Written by Brian Michael Bendis, and illustrated by Olivier Coipel, its first issue debuted in June 2005, as a follow-up to the events of the Planet X and Avengers Disassembled storylines, in which the mutant superhero Scarlet Witch suffered a mental breakdown and tried to alter the fabric of reality to recreate her lost children. How to Create a Shutdown or Reboot Icon

Windows XP has a program called Shutdown.exe which allows you to easily create icons toshutdown or restart your computer.

To create a shutdown shortcut on the desktop:

01. Right click on an open area of the desktop

02. Select New / Shortcut

03. Enter in "shutdown -s -t 00" - no quotes

04. Press the Next button

For the name, enter in anything you like. I just use shutdown. Click on the Finish button.

05. For a reboot, enter "shutdown -r -t 00"

Shutdown [{-l-s-r-a}] [-f] [-m [\\ComputerName]][-t xx] [-c "message"] [-d[u][p]:xx:yy]

Parameters

-l - Logs off the current user, this is alsothe defualt. -m

ComputerName takes precedence

-s - Shuts down the local computer.
-r - Reboots after shutdown.
-a - Aborts shutdown. Ignores other parameters,except -l and

ComputerName. You can only use -a during thetime-out period.

-f - Forces running applications to close.
-m [\\ComputerName] - Specifies the computerthat you want to shut down.
-t xx - Sets the timer for system shutdown inxx seconds. The default is 20 seconds.
-c "message" - Specifies a message to bedisplayed in the Message area of the SystemShutdown window. You can use a maximum of 127characters. You must enclose the message inquotation marks.
